Quickview has alleged that HyperCard, which has been bundled with every Macintosh computer sold since August 1987, infringes U.S. Patent No. 4,486,857. Quickview's patent consists of an improved display system for microcomputers. The patent covers technology that enables a computer program to display only portions of multiple fields on a computer screen with the ability to see the entire contents of any given field. HyperCard incorporates this technology. The technology at issue is also used in Zoomracks, which was introduced in 1985, two years before HyperCard. Zoomracks is published by Quickview Systems and also incorporates technology covered by U.S. Patent No. 4,736,308, which Quickview has not alleged that Apple has infringed. The program allows users to pop up a word processing or text file over another application. It can quickly find lost files, given any word or phrase in the file. Use of wildcards allow for searches in one file, multiple files, multiple directories, or even multiple drives. PC-Browse hypertext linking can be used to cross reference pieces of information, to link words or phrases within a file, between two files, or among many files. Users can also develop menu systems. In non-resident mode, the program automatically executes program files when the user follows a link to them. PC-Browse requires about 60K of RAM in memory-resident mode, and 2.0 DOS or higher. Like all Quicksoft programs, PC-Browse is shareware. Full registration ($49) provides the software, printed manual, 1-year technical support, and a quarterly newsletter. IBM ENHANCES SCREEN READER, TEXT-TO-VOICE OUTPUT SOFTWARE ----------------------------- (BPS) -- IBM has enhanced its Screen Reader program -- a system that enables a blind or visually impaired person to transform information on the computer screen into voice output. Screen Reader 1.1 operates on an IBM Personal Computer or Personal System/2 and works with other manufacturers' products -- specifically screen- enlargement programs and desktop scanners -- to provide a powerful solution for blind or visually impaired users. Through this combination of products, users will be able to enlarge the characters on the computer display, scan printed material into computer files, and hear the characters and scanned information read aloud.
